How to create custom jewelry with a designer
Why have a jewelry artist design your custom piece and how to go about getting it done.
Are you thinking about having a custom engagement ring made or a special piece of jewelry for yourself or loved one?
If so you have a couple of options:
A: You can go to a chain store and have something made from their stock to your liking
You may save a little money by going to a large chain store since they buy stones and metal in bulk. If you are looking to save some money you should stick with the chain stores. Your design may not be a one of a kind though.
B: You can seek out an independent jewelry designer.
A jewelry designer may cost a little more but designing one of a kind or limited edition pieces are where independent jewelry designers really shine! Having a piece designed just for you will make a statement, turn heads, reveal your truths and empower you through daily reminders of what you love and who you are.
Once you have decided who to work with let the designing begin!
Search online and check out different jewelry designer’s websites, find someone you resinate with or feel a connection with their design style . Contact the designer to see if they do custom work (not all jewelry designers do custom work). It’s best to find a designer who is creating pieces that are similar to the style of jewelry that you are wanting to create.
What to do next:
Convey your idea: Communication is very important!
1. Let the designer know the piece or pieces from their collection that best fits your desired design then discuss modifications that you desire.
2. Draw your design to the best of your ability.
Send a photo of your inspiration. Most jewelry designers will not copy other jeweler’s designs (it’s unethical) but if you see a setting that you like or design element that you would like to add you should discuss this with them.
3. Be as specific as you can about your desired outcome.
It’s important to know exact sizes:
Ring size-Finger size
Width of ring band
Bracelet size-Wrist size
Width of bracelet
Earring gauge if you want larger than average earring gauged earrings.
Pendant size: width, length, thickness, heavy or lite
Chain length for pendant
Other design elements to consider:
Type of Metal: Sterling Silver
Gold: Yellow, White, Rose 14, 18, 22 Karat
Copper or Brass
Do you want a stone
If so what color, shape, size
How many
This is an outline of what to think about and how to go about getting your design moving in the right direction. I will talk about stones and considerations for those in your design on my next blog post.
All in all have fun creating with your chosen designer! It is exciting for you and your designer to bring the piece to life.
Creation comes from within, it is inspired by our soul, nature, dreams, memories, futures and love.
When I create I share my energy, empowerment, and inspired beauty with you by designing a piece suited specifically for you through intuitive inspiration via your energy, or you may have a specific design already in mind, I will help you with that also. If you are inspired by my designs or writing please contact me, I would be honored to help you realize your next amazing piece of jewelry!
